Thursday Free NBA Picks - 1-8-09

Happy New Year!  And welcome back to some FREE NBA picks here at  Did everyone have a nice break?  I know I knocked back a few last week.  But of course, after a few hours of drinking games, I woke up late the next morning and with a headache.  Amen to drinking games.

Only two games are on the schedule for tomorrow and both are a big mismatch on paper.  Since we'll have bigger spreads to work with, let's get down to business.  Here's to a winning season in 2009 to all of you out there!!  On to the matchups...

New York Knicks (13-20) vs. Dallas Mavericks (21-13)
These two teams met earlier in November at NY, with Dallas coming away with a 10 point victory.  So what will happen now that Dallas is host?  Dallas holds an 11-6 SU record at home, while NY has a 5-12 record on the road.  Ouch.  Dallas has done well lately with a 4-1 record against recent opponents, but all of those teams have been terrible!  So now let's look deeper at their ATS records.  Dallas has a terrible 4-12 record at home ATS, while NY comes in at 9-7 on the road.  Considering NY puts up a bunch of points, and has put up 100+ three times against a good defensive team like BOSTON...I look for NY to put up enough points to keep the Dallas game close.  I don't know what it is, but I continue to find myself going against Dallas this year.  Maybe it's to upset txcassidy.  Hehe.
Pick: New York +8

Los Angeles Clippers (8-26) vs. San Antonio Spurs (23-11)
Speaking of always picking against Dallas...I seem to always pick in favor of San Antonio.  It just feels better to have your money on Mr. Duncan, doesn't it?  The Spurs started off a bit slow this year due to Parker and Ginobili injuries.  But man, since their return, the Spurs have leapfrogged a bunch of teams in the Western Conference to now be nipping at the Lakers heel for the top spot.  The Spurs and the Clippers may have played a close game earlier this year (86-83 Spurs win), but so much has gone down hill for LAC in the past two months.  Davis, Randolph, Kaman, and Davis are all out for Thursday's game.  And while the Clippers have kept their past five games within 8, I just see SA blowing the doors off this game.
Pick: San Antonio -13

So there you have it.  Tread lightly on these Thursday games while watching some BCS madness.  Bad matchups, big spreads, and a split on the Texas Two-Step.  As txcassidy might say...Yeehaw!  Until next week...
