Edinson Volquez: Fantasy Player Analysis

If you drafted Edinson Volquez expecting any where near the results that he is experiencing, then I would call you a liar, and/or smarter than me.  Most people like to look at a Pitcher's ERA and WHIP, which are definitely important, but how you get there can be more indicative of how the pitcher is actually doing.  BABIP is a great measuring stick as it pretty much eliminates some of the luck involved.  Currently Volquez is sporting a BABIP of .300, which is pretty much exactly on par with the MLB average.  Therefore, not only is he not getting lucky, his ERA and WHIP are legit.

Edinson Volquez's ERA is an astounding 1.12, and nothing could be more apparent than a chart from FanGraphs.com that shows you just how good he has gotten in this category.

I seriously doubt he will continue in this dominant of a fashion, but he seems to be the real deal.  He is throwing around 95mph on average for his fastball, which is stellar, resulting in his K/9, rising to Santana levels.  BVolquez K/9Volquez K/9asically, what I am saying is that if you have him and drafted him on purpose, you are smarter than I.  If you are another manager looking for pitching support, he may be your man, although I would be weary of wins as he does play for Cincinnatti who is currently sporting an 18-23 record.  However, if he keeps his ERA this low, you won't have to worry.
